In perhaps the most chilling and surreal event to ever occur during an NFL game, Buffalo Bills defensive back, Damar Hamlin, suffered a cardiac arrest after a blow to his chest during last night's Monday Night Football game between the Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals, as reported by CNN. We here at the United Sportsball Alliance Fantasy League hope for the best and a full recovery. Donations to Damar's Charity can be made here.
As we all know by now, the game was postponed with no makeup date yet scheduled. The Monday Night game between the Bills and the Bengals had only minor statistical implications on the season's final games here in the USAFL, with only the result of the 5-6 game between Nash Kato and Takada Monster Army left in question. At this point, whatever ESPN decides to do will stand as the result. The USAFL Bowl Game and the Consolation Cup are both decided no matter the Bengals/Bills game, leaving nothing to question other than final ranking results.
Early in the matchup, the Strokes set the tone with a stellar 24-point performance by 5th-round pick TE Dalton Schultz. GM Stephen stuck with him after a pair of quiet performances, turning in what will likely be one of the best games by a tight end in fantasy for championship week. Sadly, the high hopes ended there as only USAFL MVP: Christian McCaffrey was the only other player to over-perform for the Strokes with a 121 yards and one touchdown performance for a near-game high of 32 fantasy points.
It was business as usual for the Sanctus Koalas who, even without, stud QB Joe Burrow, had four starters overperform to seal a 124-100 victory in USAFL SportsBowl XX. GM Emily and Craig N. made a last-second substitution adding Cam Akers to the lineup and benching Josh Jacobs in fear of a collapse among the offense in las Vegas. It ended up being the wrong decision, but only by a 3-point margin as Cam Akers still beat projections by 2-points with 123 yards on 19 carries performance. The SportsBowl MVP was WR Davante Adams who led all players in scoring with an outstanding 36-point lights-out performance. A near career best for the wideout from Las Vegas with 153 yards and 2 TDs to cap off a 14 TD and 1443 yards season.
Emily and Craig have decided to donate this year's collection to a cause that hits very close to home for both of them. In late 2022, lifelong family friend Margie Burkhardt-Akkawi was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer leading to a double mastectomy and chemotherapy. In October, Emily and her friends in Cincinnati started a fundraiser to help supplement the medical costs of reconstructive surgery and other financial burdens Margie faces during her recovery raising over $3,000 already. As a 38-year-old in the prime of her life, Margie is a loving and selfless daughter, wife, sister, and friend. Yet her most notable attribute comes from being a fantastic mother to her 6-year-old daughter, Amira. It is our hope that the $240 donated from the USAFL helps in any way possible. As always, I will post pictures of the donation confirmation and receipt.
If you would like to donate money or purchase a breast cancer awareness t-shirt (all proceeds go to the fundraiser) please visit www.Margiesfight.com.
As we look forward to Season 21 the biggest question on everyone's mind is what happens with the World Champion Koalas? Emily and Craig signed on as interim GM's so the original GM and owner Kim could take a break this season. It was wrongly assumed that they would finish average at best and Kim would retake the reigns next season. No one expected a Championship but here we are and whatever happens next is anyone's guess. Stay tuned for news and updates as we begin the USAFL 2023 Off Season.
